European Commission’s Enterprise and Industry Directorate visits the region - 24/08/09
Mr Weissenberg, who is Director for Aerospace, GMES, Security and Defence within DG Enterprise and Industry, visited the University of Leicester and Rolls-Royce as part of a short regional visit. Mr Weissenberg was accompanied by James Copping, Policy Advisor in the Aeronautics Unit of DG Enterprise. emda’s International and Innovation Director, David Wallace, accompanied the visitors.
Professor Paul Monks of the University of Leicester said: “The visit is recognition of the profile of the space applications sector within the East Midlands region and the role GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) and GMES (Global Monitoring for the Environment and Security) play in positioning the East Midlands as the UK’s centre for space applications alongside our pre-eminent role in technology”. After the discussion with the East Midlands Space Working Group, EMSpaceNet, the visitors met the University’s Vice Chancellor Bob Burgess.
At Rolls-Royce the visitors discussed the company’s work in the recession and various European initiatives with Ric Parker, Rolls-Royce’s Director of Research and Technology. This was followed by a tour of the factory.
