Key Sectors

The East Midlands’ Regional Economic Strategy (RES) identifies four sectors that are likely to make the greatest contribution to the East Midlands’ economy over the lifetime of the RES:

-    Transport equipment:

• Logistics, aerospace and aircraft engines, train construction and motorsport; the East Midlands has a thriving transport equipment sector;

-    Food & drink:

• Food & drink manufacture is the largest manufacturing sub-sector in the region, with the sector forecast to grow by 30% in the period 2004-2014;

-    Construction:

• The construction industry accounts for more than 8% of the region’s economy and workforce and is expected to grow by 27% over the period 2004-2014;

-    Healthcare:

• The healthcare sector accounts for 7.5% of the East Midlands economy and 10% of the region’s workforce and is expected to grow by 44% over the period 2004-2014.
